A Message from our CEO
Crawford/Allied Crawford Steel is a privately held company founded by Sidney Spiegel in 1944.
Sid recognized at an early age that what some perceived as garbage and junk can be useful and valuable to others.
The company began as a small scrap yard, dealing in discarded metal and other materials.
Along with selling the scrap he brought to the mills, he pulled short lengths, re-worked some scrap and was able to re-sell it in small quantities to the retail public.
Being a true entrepreneur, he then supplemented this re-used steel with steel from service centers and developed a small steel distribution center in the small city of Belleville, Ontario. Growing slowly, Sid opened other small steel service centers in Peterborough, ON and Burlington, ON.
In 1977, I, Gary Stern, married into the family, moved to Belleville, ON and fell in love with the steel distribution business. Over the years, Sid and I developed the business to where it is today – 17 distribution centers and 1 scrap yard. Our goal is to grow to 25 locations over the next 5 years.
Both Sid and I have the hands on experience to know that for a business to succeed, it has to meet the needs of its customers. We know that you the customer want good, clean, certified steel in different quantities from pieces to truckloads – and you want it tomorrow! Sid and I have worked long and hard with our people and management to ensure we meet your needs.
